Renewing and increasing our commitment to the enviroment

Seventeen years ago, when the main consumer electronics companies formed the ECOTIC Foundation, achieving our founding objective – to ensure the responsibilities of our member companies and organisations are met in the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment, and to promote, train in and raise awareness of sustainable development – was a major challenge in a society then little accustomed to concepts such as the environment, sustainability and the circular economy.

Throughout our history, we have made great progress in this area, as endorsed by meeting all the indicators that certify efficient management based on transparency and cooperation. Today there are already more than 1,000 producers placing their trust in ECOTIC, which further strengthens our position as benchmark system, both in Spain and in Europe.

We have engaged ourselves fully on this path to deliver excellence in management and, in partnership with other international players, have worked to improve the WEEE recycling and management sector. This partnership has been strengthened by the setting up of two European organisations of whom we are active members.

Since 2015, we have been a founding member of WEEE Europe, an organisation that provides advice to EPRCSs and producers in 30 European countries.

This has enabled us to increase the membership of producers of electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and accumulators in the European Union and to provide advice on compliance with country-specific requirements. We are also a member of the WEEE Forum, the international benchmark association for Extended Producer Responsibility Collective Systems (EPRCS), which aims to align and improve the criteria for the management of electrical and electronic equipment and to promote studies, research and initiatives to raise social awareness.

Today there are over 1000 member producers placing their trust in ECOTIC, which further strengthens our position as a benchmark system, not just in Spain, but in Europe too.

In January 2022 we reached an important milestone by setting up ECOTIC Entidad Administradora S.L. for the management of environmental services, a non-profit company created to improve the services we offer to producers of electrical and electronic equipment and collection points, which will optimise our organisational system by boosting synergies that will provide us with efficiency in the collection, treatment and control of waste.

Areas in which ECOTIC acts

“We have been fully committed to providing excellence in management and, in collaboration with other international players, have worked to improve the WEEE recycling and management sector”

Waste management

Our main activity is financing and managing all categories of WEEE from member producers through our Extended Producer Responsibility Collective System (EPRCS), for which we have national authorisation, while providing solutions to needs on a European level.

Our management includes the development of systems for the collection, treatment and control of waste from member companies, as well as monitoring and advice so that they comply with all the responsibilities and legal obligations in force in environmental matters.

Research and training

Our activities also include the promotion of national and international studies and research on waste collection, treatment and control systems, with the aim of providing new solutions and improvements in recovery and recycling systems.

We turn this knowledge into training and information for manufacturers, distributors and installers, which we promote together with professional associations with the aim of improving the environmental management of WEEE.

Dissemination and sensitisation

Another of our areas of activity is the promotion of information and awareness campaigns aimed at professional groups, society in general and educational centres, in order to transmit the need to give electrical and electronic equipment a second chance through reuse or, failing that, the importance of good waste management in the development of a circular economy and the improvement of the environment.

The people who make it possible

The success of our management is based on a group of people who, apart from being excellent professionals, are strongly committed to values that are perfectly aligned with our purpose as an organisation.” Their efforts to improve every day, their commitment to innovation, their ability to work as a team and their willingness to serve our members and partners make them ECOTIC‘s main asset. A team committed to improving the three operational areas of our organisation.

Administration and Finance Area

This is made up of the people who ensure the good management of our financial and administrative operations, and who are responsible for keeping both the Board of Trustees of ECOTIC Foundation and the governing body of ECOTIC Entidad Administradora informed so that they can make the best possible decisions.

Projects and Companies Area

It is made up of the people responsible for the management of membership and member loyalty, as well as for carrying out technical projects, training actions, the execution of information and communication campaigns, and the management of our participation in national and international forums related to our sector or linked to the circular economy.

Operations Area

The people in this area are responsible for the organisation, control and monitoring of all the logistics and treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment. Also for the functions deriving from these, such as the negotiation of contracts and agreements with our distributors and with treatment plants and waste managers. They are also responsible for the relationship with the regional and local administrations in all matters relating to requirements, formalities and authorisations.

Committed board

Having representatives of the most prominent companies in the consumer electronics sector among our trustees is a guarantee of successful decision-making. The members of the Board of Trustees are fully committed to our objectives and contribute their knowledge and support in the approval of management programmes, in establishing the criteria for the creation of new areas of activity and in defining how the available funds are applied and distributed. All the companies we represent share our values: defence of the environment and management oriented towards promoting the circular economy.
